Edo Election: INEC deploys Osinbajo' s friend, Prof. Soremekun, as Returning Officer

The stage appears set for the Edo state governorship election with the
appointment by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of the
vice chancellor of the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti, Professor Kayode
Soremekun, as the returning officer for the election.
Soremekun is said to be a close ally of the Vice President, Professor Yemi
Osinbajo. The fear in some circles is that he may be sympathetic to the
cause of his friend’s party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) and thus
be disposed to do some bidding to favour the party.
There were credible pieces of information yesterday from the grapevine
that certain instructions that will be helpful to the APC have been handed
down to Soremekun.
The specifics of the instructions were yet to be known as of press time.
But sources close to the development hinted that Soremekun looks ready to
carry out whatever instructions that might have been given or that will be
given to him by the INEC and influential persons in the government both in
Edo state and at the federal level.
However, it was gathered that some professors from the same university who
were contacted for appointment as Local Government returning officers
said they were not interested and turned down the job offer.
A source close to the development said “They did not accept the job
because they reportedly said they did not want to be used to perpetrate
the planned rigging of the election by the All Progressives Congress.”
It was learnt that a certain Professor Bakare was one of those who
rejected the offer to be part of the team.  He was still being persuaded
to accept the offer as of Monday night.
